jambiya type knife? I was given a very high dollar one by a captain in the SANG when I trained them back in the 80s. It was stolen a few years ago. I have been unable to find one made of decent steel to replace it. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm just in love with the microtech credit card knife, & I'm about click "checkout", ~but first, I know that disguised weapons not legal, but is it a disguised weapon if it's black steal with 3 round wholes in it with a serrated blade?, ~it's hard to imagine a merchant mistaking it for a real credit card if one wanted charge anything to it. It doesn't appear that the knife is to look anything like a credit card, only the dimensions are the same so that it fits in a billfold.

A billfold is a conveinent place f/ a knife because are billfolds are muggers are after, we expose are billfolds at public ATM's, maybe the buss stop to get out the fare, the bart machine, ect.. And so I don't see why a billfold knife should be considered a disguised weapon, ~it's a knife that's kept in a billfold.... Are they illegal?

Love, Peace, & Harmony....

I loved my Boye folder, but have always preferred the simplicity and reliability of a fixed blade. When I saw that Boye is now making a fixed blade from their dendritic cobalt steel, I could not resist! It's a bit of a splurge, but in a true survival situation, what piece of gear is more important than your knife?

This knife won't rust, even in salt water. It holds an edge for hundreds of cuts, yet sharpens quickly when necessary. It's all one piece of metal! virtually indestructable!

My new knife arrives this week. I can hardly wait!
Is there such thing as a collector's license?
Spoke with a store that sells them. They are legally allowed to sell them because of their sellers permit. but he said that TECHNICALLY I am not allowed to own them.
State laws override Federal.

Bowie Knives

Maybe I am flogging this subject to death, but I have just received four Pakistani 'Throwing' bowie knives, mailed to me from the United States.

These knives were highly recommended on several sites as good throwing knives because they are 'cheap', about $12 each. I have to say that I am quite impressed with them. They are big, and 'beefy' knives with 10" blades that are 2" wide. Since I have ordered four of them, I have taken to wearing two of them on my belt. I have noticed though that a lot of 'tough guys' give me some pretty nasty 'big backyard' stares if I walk into a bar.

So I thought I would bring up some questions not only about these particular knives, but knives in general.

Cheap vs. Expensive. = Even on the 'discount' cutlery site where I ordered these knives, there were some smaller Bowie knives, as well as hunting knives, etc. that were priced as high as several hundred dollars. These knives are smaller than the bowies that I have, so why the extra expense? Name brand? Workmanship? Metal quality?

Big vs. Small= In some ways I can see the advantages of a big knife over a small knife, especially when it comes to such things as hacking branches off trees, and so forth. However, are there instances when a small knife is better than a big Bowie? I suppose that's like asking if a scalpel is better than a sword. You wouldn't want to use a sword for surgery or a scalpel for fighting from horseback.

However, one disadvantage seems to be that these Bowie knives are easily seen. This was a bar with about 50 to 80 people and I got some pretty 'intense stares' from about ten men. I should mention that there have been some stabbings in the area lately, however...this is a bar where the owner is also my landlord (I live above the bar.)

Carry vs. Use = It is my understanding that if you carry a knife, you should be familar with how to use it. This includes fighting with your knife. 'If you carry a knife, be prepared to draw it, use it, and go to jail, or die.' Many people have also cautioned me about the possibilty of being attacked with your own weapon.

To that end, is carrying TWO bowie knives 'overkill', or asking for trouble? I kind of feel like a bit of a 'cowboy' carrying these two huge knives on my belt. However, I feel that looking like a cowboy is asking for trouble...especially in an area where people have been stabbed.

Incidentally, these knives came dull. I could sharpen them, but it is my understanding tat throwing knives should have a dull blade for safety purposes. It is the pointy end that sticks.

The throwing bowies on the knife throwing site had their handles and crossguard removed, so that they were stripped down to nothing but blade and tang. I am reluctant to do this with my knives, although I would then have three to thow, and one to sharpen and carry around for utility.

Douk-Douk

I have just picked up a 'Douk-Douk' knife for my birthday.

This is an interesting knife with an unusual history. It was one of the first mass-produced 'buck knife' style of knives. They were specifically designed for the African market. It's a cheap knife with a high qualitiy blade. In many parts of Northern Africa the word 'douk-douk' is synonymus with 'knife'. Different tribes in Africa use 'Douk-Douks' differently. The blades can be made so sharp that the bedouins use them as strait razors. Since it is a folding knife, some desert tribes hammer the knife just below the axe to make a rigid handled knife which they hide in their lapels for self-defence purposes. Pygmies would break off the tip and use the knives as a chisel.

The knife isn't a lock-back, it has a spring to keep it open. This makes it difficult to open but makes the knife universally legal. Douk-douk knives that were used in South America tend to have a flourescent coloured handle of yellow or orange so that they are easy to see. These knives are great utility knives that are usually tossed into a first aid kit or the cockpit of a plane to make it complete.

The knife has the words 'Douk-Douk' on the blade as well as an engraving of a strange-looking 'chicken man'. This character is a 'Douk-Douk', a polynesian Sorcerer and member of a secret society. He takes his name from the polynesian god of Doom and destruction.

Question re: education on knife quality

Greetings all!
I'm new here and wish to build a small quality knife collection of my own. I have a real interest in double blades especially (daggers), though not exclusively. Will those of you who obviously have more information and experience than me please give me some "pointers" (ouch, sorry for the pun)?
Information you have on how to judge quality, websites and links for purchasing would be most welcome.
Ave! ~Nephtys

p.s. special thanx goes out to Skott for having this tribe on your page. :D

I carry a Victorinox brand Swiss Army knife of one kind or another. A Ranger or Farmer mostly. I love the Victorinox saw! I also carry a Leatherman Charge XTi, especially on weekends for "honey-dos."

Just curious, it's time to go shopping for some new throwing knives. Give me your favorites, even if it's not a throwing knife. My favorite to date is still a diving knife I picked up on the east coast, rubber grip, perfect weight for me.

Wilderness survival knife?

Hello everyone,
New to tribe, nice to be here.
I know very little about knives. I've owned one in my life when I was living in the forests in Oregon.. I don't remember what kind it was. The guy at the store told me it was quality, so I trusted him. My friends oooed and ahhhed over it.. very nice. Umm, so I lost it.
Anyhoo.. now I'm looking to buy a new one. I'm looking for quality. I'd like an all purpose type knife, used mainly for wilderness survival type stuff.
I'm looking for any info and advice ya'll have to offer me.. like where to buy one, and what kind.
Thanks so much!

Am curious if anyone has experience and will share here, how to make a reasonably durable knife and machete for hunting and utilitarian purposes on ones one in the wildnerness, from nothing but scrounged materials?
This means no premade forges, tools, etc.

Speed is of the essense. The quicker the draw, the less likely an assailant will have to get the upper hand. This is the knife I carry. Iterestingly enough I think of the knife part as a secondary weapon. The people I've had to whack with the knuckle part want nothing more to do with it. I used to carry a Fairbairn Sykes commando and had to use that a few times, but since I started carrying my knuckle knife about ten years ago, I haven't had to cut anyone. Nice to have options and speedy too.

Highly recommended. A Serious business knife.

Ran across this web page in a carving site's FAQ which states that you shouldn't resharpen unless you chip or break the blade: http://www.woodcarvers.com/sharpening.htm

I'm guessing it's specific to woodcarving instruments an dtheir narrower blade angle, wondered if anyone had run across this type of advice in other contexts...

Liner locks - yea or nay?

I'm curious what you all think about liner locks as a knife locking mechanism. I've encountered comments from designers saying they went to liner locks because they're the best option and comments from people who think they're a waste. Or is the quality of the knife the best indicator of whether the liner lock is solid?

Thanks, G

Knowing it is our right the bear arms, does anyone find difficulty with the law when wearing a dagger on your belt?
I really hate all the rules about length that state and city ordinances maintain. I like to carry a nine inch tanto, but I must do so in a conceiled manner, and this I understand is a felony. I would love to be able to carry a knife openly without fear of some legal official informing me that my knife is too long.

Keith Alexander, the moderator of this tribe, has passed away. I have asked permission from Tribe to post information in Keith's profile about his death. I expect that to be posted in a day or so.

Until then, here is one memorial:
www.deesnider.com/CMS/conte...iew/167/2/

In the process, they gave me the list of tribes he was on and noted which he moderated. I asked for information on changing the moderator as one of the other tribes he moderates has already posted about figuring out how to pass this along.

This is what I was told:

To designate a new person as the moderator, please ask the tribe members to collectively appoint one. Once they have a consensus, the new mod. needs to send us a message from the e-mail used to log into his/her tribe account,
with the words "Moderator change - Knives & Blades" in the subject
header, indicating that they're going to take over. Please also ask that
they include a link to the discussion. They must already be a member of the
tribe to take over. We'll send out a confirmation message when the change is
complete.

So, once you decide, please send this to wendy@tribe.net.

--bailey
(missing Keith tremendously)

Han Wei Tai Chi Sword?

Greetings, just found this tribe(whilst looking for the best place to pose this question).

My question is has anyone tried modifying a Han Wei blade/handle, specifically his line of tai chi swords? I recently purchased one of these swords, and the balance is fantastic, but the handle is plastic. That's gotta go. I was just wondering if anyone has tried modifying these swords in any way, if you have any tips, comments, etc

Thanks in advance

I love the Benchmaid balisong. But I see that spiderco is coming out with a new design also. Has anyone felt it yet? I don't really like the action on the cold steel either... Just trying to decide
thanks

Hi there,

Just giving my regards-great idea for a tribe! I'm sure it'll begin filling up soon. I myself tend to be a fan of daggers, particularly stilettos, which I find very graceful. Yourself?
