jambiya type knife? I was given a very high dollar one by a captain in the SANG when I trained them back in the 80s. It was stolen a few years ago. I have been unable to find one made of decent steel to replace it. Any help would be appreciated.

Fri, April 25, 2008 - 8:07 AMI wasnt sure what a jambiya knife was either but I didnt want to sound ignorant. lol I'd like to get into knife making myself. I have a box of worn out hoof file's I'd like to make knive's out of. I understand Buck made combat knive's with them during world war 1. So far all I've done is read book's about it but havent tried any hand's on stuff yet. -

Re: Any American knifesmith make a......
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 8:55 AMThe jambiya is a broad class of double-edged personal knives found in the Near East. Styles vary from country to country. Some are decorative and symbolic. Others are functional. Jambiyas are straight for part of their lengths and end in a curve. -

Re: Any American knifesmith make a......
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 9:34 AMthe thing about custom knives is... they are custom.
any knifemaker can make almost anything you want. it's best to find one who makes knives much like you are looking for and then just talk to them. i would not ask a maker who specializes in tactical folders or big combat fixed blades to make a middle eastern dagger. or ask an art knife maker to make an S90v and titanium framelock. duh.
for the most part you will find they are great guys and more then willing to talk you through the process to end up with exactly what you want :)

Fri, April 25, 2008 - 6:53 AMThanks for the link, a ccouple of his knives look like they are based on the jambiya style.
For those that don't know a jambiya is a curved double edged knife based on the canine tooth or claw of a tiger I believe.

Re: Any American knifesmith make a......
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 8:10 AMThere's a couple of guy's that make knive's around here. The blade's are made from old saw mill blades and they just dont feel sturdy enough to me. I think they put more into the stag handle than they do the blade. If they would put the handle's like they make on a heavier blade I would buy one in a heartbeat. -

Re: Any American knifesmith make a......
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 9:58 AMThe steel used in saw mill blades (at least the newer ones) are alloyed to be flexible and springy (say L6), while truly modern ones have the teeth welded on (tungsten carbide, WC). Neither of which make good blades, servicable yes but not good unless you want a very flexible blade, like a filleting knife.
For the type of knife you are talking about have someone make it out of 1085, 1095, a high carbon stainless steel, wootz damascus or pattern forged out of those metals then have them harden it to Rockwell C 55-63 so it will hold an edge. BTW a blade that hard won't break unless you use it stupidly - like as a screwdriver or prybar.
