I am interested in learning how to use my sais. I only desire to learn some basic katas and uses for them. Does anyone around santa cruz or san francisco know how to use them and could show me some things?

Re: Do you know sai?
Sun, April 23, 2006 - 12:20 PMI only know of them being taught by traditional Japanese/Okinawan karate schools and then they tend to prefer teaching them to more senior students, along with other weapons under the general name of kobudo. There used to be a branch of an organization (Butokukai) offering such training in Santa Cruz and all around the area but I've lost touch with them and don't see an obvious listing. Suggest you start by contacting local karate schools and asking around.
Hope this helps!

Re: Do you know sai?
Tue, April 25, 2006 - 6:15 PMFor an alternate take the indonesian martial arts also use a weapon very similiar to the sai. They call it by a few differnt names (siku-siku or tjabang being the most common) and use them in some interesting ways. I know that there are at least a couple of schools of indonesian martial arts around the Santa Cruz area as well as San Francisco so you might want to try calling some of them.
However, to echo Genghis' warning, most martial arts schools do not teach weapons systems to a beginner and rarely will teach just a single element of their style, usually they just teach the whole system, but if you are willing to pay for private instruction you might find one who is willing to just show you only sai forms and applications. -

Are you thinking about Silat, in terms of the art? I keep meaning to see if there are any Silat schools in the Seattle area. Do they train with the kris/keris knife at the higher levels? -

Re: Do you know sai?
Tue, April 25, 2006 - 11:47 PMYup, I sure am thinking of pentjak silat and from what I understand, there are a few fine schools around the Seattle area.
Some systems do train keris in their weapons curriculum but it depends on where in Indonesia the style comes from. Some cultures view the keris as a talisman or spiritual heirloom so do not train for combat with it.
Here's a couple of sites local to the Seattle area to get you started.

I don't know what you travelling sitch is, but there's alos some good silat to the north...
